CO2-impact
Science based target
We report extensively on our CO2 consumption because we follow the guidelines of the Science Based Target. These are science-based guidelines that help organizations reduce their emissions in accordance with the Paris climate goals, the goals to which we have committed ourselves.
This means that our emission reduction projects are aimed at keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. This implies that our emissions must be climate-neutral by 2050. As we work towards this goal, we focus on the medium-term objective of reducing CO2 emissions by 50 percent every 10 years. Our environmental barometer reports show that we are ahead of schedule.
CO2 emissions
In collaboration with the environmental barometer, we at Life & Mobility keep track of our water, energy, and fuel consumption. All departments, including Facility, Procurement, Logistics, and Production, contribute to this effort. By tracking our annual consumption, we can calculate our corresponding CO2 emissions. The pie chart below shows Life & Mobility’s CO2 emissions for the year 2021.
Explanation of major energy emitters
The above pie chart illustrates the CO2 emissions of Life & Mobility for the year 2021. We will briefly explain the two largest emission sources below.
Electricity: 23%
In 2021, only ‘grey’ electricity was purchased. This electricity is used in several different departments:
- Facility: lighting and other equipment;
- Production: driving industrial applications;
- ICT: computers and servers.
One notable point is the relatively high consumption of servers during the night hours, which accounts for 24% of the total consumption. Further investigation is being conducted to justify this.
Goods transport (19% + 27% =) 46%
Goods transport can be divided into the transportation of products to our customers and the transportation of parts to our factory. Approximately one-third of the total impact of transportation can be attributed to sea transport, with only a small portion attributed to air freight. Road transport accounts for the vast majority of emissions.
All of our transport partners are already actively working to reduce their environmental impact. We also take this into account when evaluating our partners.
